Prepare for Your Garage Sale Done
1. Clean out your garage and home of unwanted items.

2. Ask friends and family for garage sale donations.

3. Clean sellable items as best as you can for better presentation.

4. Tell neighbors of your plans for a garage sale: multi-family sales attract more people.

5. Schedule a date and place an ad in the local paper and online classifieds.

6. Gather tables and drop cloths to display items. Drop cloths are good for ground displays. Use cut-fabric or flat sheets to cover tables..

7. Draw a sketch for best placement of items. If you do not want people inside your garage, either keep it closed or block it with tables.

8. Rent or purchase inexpensive portable open wardrobes to hang better clothing.

9. Price as many items as you can: may people do not like to ask. You can group similar items together with 1 price (ie: all adult clothing $3 each).

10. Be sure to include at least 1 table of "all items under $1."

11. Make garage sale signs with your address, day and time, and mention a few items for sale. Click here to see a sample.

12. Hang your signs on busy streets & intersections. Be sure to check for permit requirements first.

13. Ask friends and family to help you during your sale.

14. On the day of your sale, find an alternate location for your car.

15. Lay out toys on a drop cloth on the ground. Children will not be able to resist playing with them.

16. Think about promoting your garage sale: put a big sign out front and attach balloons to your mailbox and/or tables. Use colored tablecloths.

17. Wear a waist-pouch to collect money.

18. If you have a lot of items left from your first day, consider holding your garage sale for a second day. You can also donate, consign or sell leftover items online.

19. After your sale, be sure to collect all of the signs you placed around the neighborhood.

20. Count your proceeds and decide how you'll spend it!
