1. Put a hold on all delivery services such as mail & newspapers, or ask a neighbor to take them inside. | |

2. Set a timer for your lights (inside & out); radio. | |

3. Ask neighbors to keep an eye out for your home. | |
|
4. If you have an answering machine, do not mention you'll be away from home. | |
|
5. Be sure to close window blinds and curtains. | |
|
6. Don't forget to lock all windows and doors, and bring in any extra keys from outside. | |
|
7. Leave extra key with a trusted neighbor. | |
|
8. Adjust your thermostat. | |
|
9. Mow your lawn; trim tall hedges to unblock windows. | |
|
10. Water your plants or ask a neighbor to take care of them. | |
|
11. Unplug major appliances such as computers, televisions, washing machines. | |
|
12. Turn off washing machine water valve to avoid accidental flooding. | |
|
13. Make arrangements to board your pets or have a neighbor take care of them. | |
|
14. Clear your kitchen of garbage, dirty dishes, perishable foods; freeze leftovers. | |

4. Be sure to pay your bills before you leave, or have a trusted friend or relative pay them for you. | |

5. Be sure each adult is carrying a current driver's license; ID card. | |
|

7. Take care of health problems before you leave on vacation (doctor, dentist, vet). |
