Breastfeeding Checklist
If you're a breastfeeding mother, it's important for you to keep track of your baby's feeding sessions so you can make sure your baby is eating enough. I still have the 28 time-scribbled sheets of paper I used a few years ago when nursing my own child. I wish I had thought of this checklist back then - it would have been much easier to keep track of things! I kept track of my breastfeeding sessions for the first 2 months -- by then I had gotten used to my baby's schedule and didn't need to carry around a pen and paper. You too will become used to your baby's schedule, and hopefully with this checklist, things will be much easier for you!
It's normal for a breastfeeding baby to nurse between 8-10 times a day (we've included 11 sessions), and it's normal for breastfeeding babies to have 6-9 wet diapers, and 2-5 stools each day. You should also be able to hear your baby swallow as she nurses. One sure sign of babies doing well with breastfeeding, is their weight gain. If you have any problems, we suggest you get help from your hospital, a Lactation Consultant, or a La Leche League Leader. Don't worry if you get off to a rough start -- once you and your baby establish a breastfeeding routine, you won't need to keep track of times anymore :-).
