Family Car Checklist

There are so many cars to choose from -- how do you know which would be best for your family? This is a simple checklist that you could take with you when you go shopping for a vehicle -- it will give you some ideas of questions to ask and hopefully help you make a more informed decision on your next car purchase. We've also listed some safety brochures that you can request from the NHTSA. We hope this checklist helps you. :)

Buying a Safe Car:

To learn more about buying a safe car, we suggest you get a copy of "Buying a Safer Car" and "New Car Safety Features", which contain a full range of safety-feature information and crash-test results on cars, light trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans. Safety features include air bags (front and side), advanced safety belts, anti-lock brakes, traction control, rear-seat head restraints and adjustable upper belts. Crash-test ratings from the U.S. Department of Transportation's New Car Assessment Program are included. To order a copy, stop by your local AAA office or call the NHTSA Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236). You can also write to:

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
400 Seventh Street, SW
NTS-21
Washington, DC 20590
Fax: (202) 493-2062

Another helpful resource for vehicle safety information is National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Brochures, videos, and guides are also available from the NHTSA including: "Are You Using It Right?" (brochure), "Protecting Your Newborn" (video), and "Child Transportation Safety Tips" (guide).
